Military Matters? The Impact of Veteran Status on Recidivism. 

Adherence to institutional norms; robust social service eligibility; and health and demographic characteristics may lead U.S. military veterans to recidivate at different rates than civilians after release from a prison stint. Using over a decade of population-level prison data from the state of Pennsylvania, this paper evaluates differences in recidivism rates between veterans and non-veterans. In progress. 

Understanding Creative Labor in the NY Indie Music Scene: Competition and Community in the Age of AI and Algorithms. 

Rock musicians face an industry in transformation, one in which prototypical tastemaking mechanisms are rapidly being supplanted by algorithmic technologies and online fandom. How does a local music community navigate these new industry norms? Using interview data from prominent bands in Greater New York City, this project outlines how musicians both capitulate to and resist new demands on creative labor. In so doing, they articulate a path forward that straddles commercial and artistic success. In progress.

Population Convergence, Unique Family Formation Patterns? Differences Between U.S. Military and Civilian Populations. with Christine Percheski​

A pro-natal culture fostered by the U.S. military, in conjunction with a strong, paternalistic welfare state, have caused family formation patterns of servicemembers to diverge from that of civilians, despite increased recruitment selectivity in recent years. This paper provides current demographic estimates of military service's impact on first marriage, first birth, and other family outcomes in early adulthood. In progress.

Safety, Survival, and Transformation in Chicago's Street Outreach Programs: Explicating the Paradox of Protective Isolation. with Dallas O'Wright and Andrew Papachristos

Empirical evaluations to-date have failed to articulate how street outreach programs (CVIs) impact participants' safety perceptions. Interviews with Chicago-based program participants reveal that successful CVI completion entails evading highly dangerous contexts while simultaneously pursuing personal transformation. In progress.
