Understanding Creative Labor in the NY Indie Music Scene: Competition and Community in the Age of AI and Algorithms. 

Rock musicians face an industry in transformation, one in which prototypical tastemaking mechanisms are rapidly being supplanted by algorithmic technologies and online fandom. How does a local music community navigate these new industry norms? Using interview data from prominent bands in Greater New York City, this project outlines how musicians both capitulate to and resist new demands on creative labor. In so doing, they articulate a path forward that straddles commercial and artistic success. In progress.
